Twenty eight years of writing legend. This program reveals the secrets for you. For more details, please watch. (Science and technology garden 10 / 12 / 2014: rice growing in sea water)
Sea water grows rice! A kind of sea rice can grow and grow rice in sea water, and has strong salt tolerance and submergence tolerance. On October 18, through the field investigation by the Ministry of agriculture and other sea rice experts, it was unanimously considered as a special rice germplasm resource, with high scientific research and utilization value. Experts suggested that the state should strengthen the comprehensive protection of rice resources in the sea and vigorously support the development of systematic research. Chen Risheng, one of the discoverers of sea rice, has been struggling for 28 years for the breeding of sea rice.
Sea water grows rice! The reporter of Yangcheng Evening News learned from the relevant departments of Zhanjiang City that a kind of sea rice which can grow and grow rice in the sea water and has strong salt tolerance and submergence tolerance was unanimously considered as a special rice germplasm resource by the Ministry of agriculture and other sea rice experts on October 18. Experts suggested that the state should strengthen the comprehensive protection of rice resources in the sea and vigorously support the development of systematic research. Chen Risheng, one of the discoverers of sea rice, has been struggling for 28 years for the breeding of sea rice.

On October 18, the on-site investigation meeting of marine rice experts from the Ministry of agriculture was held in Zhanjiang. Experts from Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center, China Rice Research Institute and other units participated in the investigation meeting. The expert group made a special trip to the beach of Yanchao village, Chengyue Town, Suixi city to inspect Chen Risheng plant Sea rice.
In the morning, when the sea water ebbed, Chen Risheng pointed to the rice field and said that the rice would be submerged after the tide rose. When the rice is in the filling stage, its panicles are green and white, such as reed marsh.
"It's wild indeed!" Standing on the ridge, Xie Hua'an, former president of the Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was excited when he found that the husk had long sharp awns. He said that the use of a good gene can improve the level of breeding.
It is understood that when Chen Risheng, led by Professor Luo Wenlie, surveyed Zhanjiang Mangrove Resources in 1986, he found a rice plant that was taller than human beings and looked like a reed but bearing panicles at the seaside of Yanchao village, Yuezhen Town, Suixi County. At that time, Professor Luo told him to take 522 seeds for breeding, and continue the seeds of sea rice to this day.
As the leader of the expert group, Xie Hua'an said that seawater rice has a high level of salt tolerance and is a good seed resource, which should be supported for development and utilization. He stressed that sea water rice seeds are precious resources of the country and must be well protected.
"If rice can really grow on seawater irrigation, it will be a result of world significance." Liao Xiyuan, deputy director of the Agricultural Bureau of the Ministry of agriculture, suggested that the local agricultural protection department should manage the seeds well.
At present, this kind of sea water rice is being tested at many sites in the saline alkali land of Suixi, Lianjiang and Hainan in Guangdong Province.
A 28 year "homework"
The appearance of "sea rice" originated from an accidental discovery made by fruit farmer Chen Risheng 28 years ago.
Chen is 52 years old. In 1983, he went to the sea to plant fruit trees in the suburbs of Zhanjiang. Professor Luo Wenlie of Zhanjiang Agricultural College (now Agricultural College of Guangdong Ocean University) has been giving him technical guidance. In November 1986, he followed Professor Luo to the seaside to look for mangrove varieties. When he went to hutoupo beach, he saw a clump of rice plants, which were very tall, like reeds. When you peel off the grains, they were red. They were different from ordinary rice or wheat. "It's a good thing, maybe our ancestors of rice," said Luo
Professor Luo also said that all things come from water, and the ocean steam is hit by lightning to produce nitrogen, and then there is life. In addition, Zhanjiang, which had a volcanic eruption more than 100000 years ago, has unique geographical and climatic conditions, it is entirely possible to find some novel species here. "A lot of people don't understand the value of species. Xiao Chen, you must protect this species. "
From then on, Chen Risheng began to do this "homework". He rented the beach and dug a piece of land on the beach. The next spring, when others sowed, he also sowed the strange rice seeds he had collected.
With the rise and fall of the tide, the seeds germinate. The seedlings were very dense, and Chen Risheng divided the seedlings. "By July, when others are about to harvest, my rice is still growing like grass, and there is no sign of heading." Chen Risheng is in a hurry. But Professor Luo said that it must be a kind of rice. The vein of the leaf is the same as that of rice.
At the end of September, the rice has grown like a reed, and some of them are heading. It is not heading at the same time, but one root after another, two or three days apart. In winter, some rice is mature, some are still in bloom. Chen Risheng keeps the first mature rice as seed [breeding network: www.jdhsh. COM /], and picks the second batch of mature rice for cooking. After a taste, the taste is similar to brown rice, with a little corn flavor.
Year by year, more and more seeds have been planted, and the trial planting area has gradually expanded. By the seventh year, it would be flowering and heading almost at the same time. Their magic has also been revealed: when the tide subsides, the rice is still full of vitality; it never needs to apply medicine, fertilize or weed, with a yield of about 200kg per mu.
However, Chen has run out of money to protect the rice. This rice can only be sold at a lower price than ordinary rice. Chen Risheng has been losing money. It was only in recent years that organic food became more and more popular. "Professor Luo has passed away. I have done the homework he assigned to me for 28 years, but I have not fully understood it. I can't finish this assignment. I have to ask professionals to do it... " Mentioning the driving force of sticking to the present day, Chen Risheng, who is already gray, said, "in those years, if it was not for a male sterile wild rice found in Hainan, Academician Yuan Longping's hybrid rice would not have made a breakthrough. A humble wild rice has rewritten the history of rice breeding in the world, which has the greatest impact on me. "
Solving the world problem of "salt resistance"
More than 10 experts and scholars, including Xie Hua'an, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and famous agronomist, arrived in Zhanjiang on January 18. Academician Yuan Longping, the father of hybrid rice, is 84 years old, so he has specially sent Ma Guohui, his assistant and deputy director of National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center.
Along with experts, the reporter came to hutoupo beach. Just after the typhoon, seven or eight meters high coastal shelterbelts were lying on the ground, and the nearby "sea rice" was also lying in the rice fields, but the Rice Panicles were standing stubbornly. The height of the plant was 1.8-2.3 meters higher than the head. Chen said that this is where he discovered the "sea rice" in those years. When the tide rises twice a month, these rice fields will be submerged.
After investigation, experts said that the salt resistance of rice is a world problem, "sea rice" may solve this problem. However, it still has a series of research work to do.
Liao Xiyuan, deputy director of the seed administration of the Ministry of agriculture, suggested that coastal rice fields are often washed by typhoons and rainstorms, so it is difficult to say the salt content in the paddy fields. Therefore, a comparative study should be conducted on the salt tolerance degree and time of "sea rice" and ordinary rice. In addition, it is necessary to study and improve the sensitivity of this rice variety, otherwise, it can only be used in low latitude areas plant The next is to find out the nutrition of rice. "In any case, the research on this rice resource is of strategic significance."
Duan Hongbo took up the talk. He said that a mutant rice variety of "Haihai rice" was found in Jingzhou, which was able to tassel. This variant rice variety may have solved the problem of photosensitivity and is currently being tested.
Zhu Defeng, an expert in rice cultivation and a researcher at China Rice Research Institute, believes that "sea rice" can grow millet on the beach, which is already very good. If this rice seed can be used as seed in many places, it will be a great achievement of world significance. Lu Kaiyang, director of Hubei Seed Administration Bureau, also said that its potential value is very great and it is likely to make a great contribution to China's food security.
Academician Xie Hua'an concluded that this rice species has the advantages of salt resistance, which is a good seed resource, which can be used well, and can transfer genes to other species to make contribution to salt alkali resistance. China has saline alkali land from Hainan to Northeast China and North China, and the productivity is very low. Only when there are salt tolerant varieties can we have the potential of increasing production. To a kind of crop, can resist saline alkali, this is great value.
According to Yin Yugang, vice president of Fucheng group, there are more than 1 billion mu of saline alkali land and tens of millions of mu of coastal beach in China. With "sea rice", grain can be planted in the future. Moreover, this rice is extremely valuable because it does not need to be applied with medicine, fertilizer or weeding.
